2025 – Time to take responsibility

2024, that’s it with you. Honestly, I won’t miss you much. It’s time to look forward and think about how we can make 2025 better. Because the past year has shown us how vulnerable our society is – politically, economically, and socially.

The defense of democratic values remains one of the central tasks of our time. Threats come not only from outside, such as the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine or the return of autocratic tendencies in the United States, but also from within. Polarization, authoritarian movements, and increasing societal division are developments we cannot simply accept. The shocking attack in Magdeburg tragically reminded us of how important it is to protect our liberal democracy. Democracy thrives on all of us, on dialogue, breaking down stereotypes, and a culture of openness. Honesty and optimism, especially towards the youth, can help regain lost trust. And trust is something we desperately need.

Climate protection is also non-negotiable. Starting in 2025, the CO2 price will rise to 55 euros per ton – a clear signal for a sustainable transformation. Of course, such measures will not come without challenges, as the rising fuel prices show us. But they are indispensable and – I usually avoid this word – unavoidable. Investments in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure not only make us more resilient to crises, but also offer economic opportunities. Germany can become a leader here and score globally through innovative technologies. It is not just a question of necessity, but also of the opportunities we must seize. In economic policy, we also see that new impulses are needed. A smart combination of supply-side and demand-side policies is the key to securing stability and growth. That the Germany ticket remains at 58 euros is good news – affordable mobility is not only socially fair, but also crucial for climate policy. Young companies and start-ups, especially those founded by women, are the drivers of innovation that we need to strengthen to push forward the transformation.

These big issues have immediate impacts on the local level, on Erftstadt. So what do they mean concretely for us?

Democracy and social cohesion start locally. In a functioning and citizen-oriented administration that utilizes digital possibilities, in an open dialogue between “politics” and all citizens, and above all in the commitment to social justice. In climate protection, Erftstadt has enormous potential to become a model city. More renewable energy, a better-developed bike path network, and more charging stations are important steps. We should strategically use funding and implement the goals we have set for ourselves – this is often where we fall short more than we should. In doing so, we must not forget that cohesion in the city and the quality of life for all citizens are just as important as climate protection or infrastructure projects. Transformation can only succeed if everyone is included.

As Geier Sturzflug sang already in the late 70s: “Now it’s time to spit in our hands again.” Let’s get to work. I wish you all a fulfilling 2025.
